Van Horn, Texas: A Dozen Reasons To Stay in Van Horn

  1. Visit the Convention Center & Visitors Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce, located at 1801 W. Broadway, for information. Hours are 8a.m. to 5p.m., Monday through Saturday. If time permits, ask for a tour of the Union Pacific railroad caboose.
  2. Browse Local Businesses for fun momentos, supplies, real Spanish and western style items and other bargains.
  3. Mountainview Golf Course. Located on S. Golf Course Drive, this nine hole beauty (alternate tees can make for a full 18) features bent grass greens, some awesome views and no waiting in line! Open Tuesday -Sunday year round.
  4. Culberson County Historical Museum. The former Clark Hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Located at 110 W. Broadway, displays include Indian relics, pioneer items and old saloon bar. Hours of operation fluctuate with the seasons. Contact the Visitors Bureau or Chamber of Commerce for more information.
  5. City Park. Located at E. 3rd & Austin. Enjoy covered or open picnic areas, swimming pool (Memorial Day -Labor Day), playground and restrooms. The park occupies the site of the first Culberson County Courthouse, and the original jailhouse, built in 1914, still stands proudly-complete with aState Historic Marker.
  6. Smokehouse Auto Museum. The on I y classic car museum in Far West Texas! Located at 905 W. Broadway, completely restored vehicles from the 20'5 to the 60's are featured from 6a.m. - 10:30p.m., Monday through Saturday. The cars are rotated bi-monthly from a private collection. Also features photos, license plates and automobilia.
  7. Presbyterian Church. Located at W. 3rd & Fannin, this was the towns' first church, serving several denominations since 1902. Astate Historic Marker was awarded in 1964.
  8. "The Castle". Located at Highway 54 & 3rd, this 1910 house was later remodeled by the Duke D'Autri to resemble his European family home.
  9. Tennis, anyone? Play on one of the local school districts four courtesy courts. Contact the Chamber of Commerce, Visitors Bureau or school administration office for info.
  10. Van Horn State Bank. Occupies the former EI Capitan Hotel at 103 E. Broadway. Constructed in 1936, this hotel offered more splendorous accommodations, playing host to such notables as Cary Grant, General Wainwright and others. The bank has preserved the original Spanish tile floor and overhead beams, and several big game trophies grace the walls, as proof that Van Horn offers one of the finest hunting spots in the Trans-Pecos region of Texas.
  11. Scenic Overlook. Located two miles west of town along 1-10, read the State Historic Marker, enjoy a picnic, or stroll up the trail to the hilItop for a pretty desert / mountain view.
  12. 1992 John Madden "Hall ot Fame." A shrine tor All-Madden Team Selections chosen each year prior to the Super bowl game. Located at 1200 W. Broadway, open 7 days a week from 9 a.m. - 10 p.m.
