THE WILD, WILD WEST
Rough and rowdy for many years, Hollywood could have used Van Horn as the model-town for their Old West movies. Law and order was far away until Culberson County was formed in 1911, with Van Horn chosen to be the county seat. As construction of the first courthouse and jail was completed in 1914, the first sheriff was killed in a gunfight.

The business of running the young government was conducted from the Cox Building until the new courthouse was finished. Built in the early 1900's, the Cox served Van Horn in several capacities. The building received a historical marker in 1971, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been horne to the Culberson County Historical Museum since 1979. Hours fluctuate seasonally. Call (915) 283-2043 for information. Stop in and escape to another time and place!
